Islamic State fighters carried out a mass killing in northern Mali. The militants attacked at least five villages and pastoral settlements in the Menaka region. Preliminary reports indicate that at least 50 people, including children and the elderly, were killed by the jihadists. The victims were members of the Doussahak Tuareg community. The jihadists set fire to homes and stole livestock. Hundreds of civilians were forced to flee to Menaka. Possible motives for the attack include suspicions that local residents were providing information to government forces about IS positions. Community representatives allegedly informed the Malian Armed Forces about the location of the group's base, 65 km from Menaka, which was subsequently targeted.
